The Funeral List
Thursday February 4, 1993
Didn't sleep much after 4 a.m. but feel pretty good when I get up at 7:30. I eat a good breakfast and go back to bed until 10. Frank is at carving class.
I wash and condition my hair. After lunch I dust our bedroom. Frank goes to the valley to bank. When he returns we go to Newbury Park to check on the roofers. On the way home we buy a pie at Marie Callendar's. I spend the afternoon reading. Smokey, our cat, is on my lap every time I sit down. He won't leave me alone.
I plan to make a list for Frank to help him make calls when and if I die.
We have a chicken and rice dinner. Donna calls. She's upset that I'm not doing better.
Oh my, I hope she didn't tell Donna she was making a list for her funeral. I don't recall whether Frank used a list or Mom's address book to call friends when she died. What I do recall is that I wanted to be the one to call Donna, her best friend since childhood. I remember I tried a few times and got no answer. Finally, on the third try Donna answered the phone. She told me she and Bob had been out for a walk. It was still early in the morning, maybe 8 or 9 a.m. She said she was happy to hear from me. There was no way to break the news gently. I told her Mom had just died. We both cried. She and Bob drove down to Simi Valley from Pollock Pines the next day. Bob said Donna said nothing the whole ride down, about a 6 hour drive. Donna was the one who was diagnosed with cancer 5 years before Mom. She was treated for breast cancer in 1986. Donna beat back that nasty cancer. 27 years later she is still going strong. I just received her Christmas card and she looks great. She's 79 years old now.
Our male Boston terrier Brutus is just like Smokey. Whenever I am sitting in a chair, without being at a desk or table, he takes that as a signal to jump up in my lap and be petted.

Dinner in Corona
Saturday January 2, 1993
I had a bad night. My chest and back hurt. I sweat alot and that continued all morning. I have a hard time getting ready to go to Rowena's. I wish I didn't have to go. By 11:30 I am ready to go. Somehow I managed to curl my hair though I couldn't get it dry due to sweat.
I start to feel better. We leave at 12:15 and arrive at Carol's in North Hollywood at 1:00. We leave there about 1:15 and arrive at Rowena and Marv's in Corona at 2:30. I'm feeling good. I'm glad I came. We have alot of laughs, a nice dinner with wine. We leave at 6:30 per my request. It's 8:30 when we get home but I still feel good.
We stay up until 10:30 saying goodbye. Bob and Donna will leave at 5 a.m. tomorrow for dinner.
I have no photos of Mom's long-time friend Rowena. I don't even know her last name, but I do remember she talked to me at Mom's funeral. We had never met until then. Rowena, Carol (Frank's current wife), Donna and Mom were good friends since early elementary school days. I admire all of them for keeping their friendship alive. I only keep in touch via Facebook with two childhood friends. That makes it easy when long distances are involved.
I didn't know where Corona was until I looked it up. It is 90 miles, almost a 2 hour drive, from Simi Valley. No wonder Mom wasn't feeling up to it. I'm glad it worked out and all the friends were able to reunite, perhaps for the last time.

New Year's Day
Friday January 1, 1993
New Year's Day
I have a bad night. I don't sleep well at all and awake with my chest pain. I will be on pain pills all day. We fix a breakfast for Donna and Bob and at 1:30 take lots of food to Gary's house where we'll spend the day. At Gary's house I spend the day in the lounge chair in my coat and covered with a quilt.
Maria's sisters Anna and Patty are there for a few hours. We eat ham sandwiches and dips. At dinner we eat 3 pounds of shrimp and fruit salad and homemade bread from our new breadmaker. Frank and Donna had alot of fun making bread today.
Ric watched football. Chris watched a movie with the boys in the motorhome. We go home at 8:30 and I go right to bed.
Poor Mom, it sounds like her last New Year's Day was a miserable one for her. She had a good day the day before. Too bad she pushed herself too much today instead of just staying home in bed and trying to get some rest.

Donna & Bob Arrive
Tuesday December 29, 1992
I decide to spend the day in bed and maybe I'll feel better tomorrow. I feel much better laying down in bed, but no better when I get up.
Donna & Bob arrive about 7 p.m. I struggle to get up and be sociable. It's not easy. We open Christmas gifts. About 10:30 I must go to bed. Everyone is tired so no problem.
This photo of Mom's best friend Donna and Donna's husband Bob was taken at Christmas 2012, 20 years after Mom's post. Donna was diagnosed with breast cancer several years before Mom had cancer, and Bob had a bout with prostate cancer a few years ago, but they are both doing well as they approach their 80th birthday. Bob loves to restore old cars and they live in a charming Victorian house with wraparound porch in Pollock Pines, California, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Mom loved Donna so much but I don't think she shared her fear and anxiety with her either, preferring to put on a brave face. I'll bet she concealed her pain very well for the 3 hours she had to force herself out of bed to be sociable.

Coffee Kept Me Awake
(1).jpg)
Monday December 14, 1992
Up at 7:30. Didn't sleep well. Coffee kept me awake until 2:30 a.m. We go out to breakfast with Donna and Bob at Eggs & Things. Bob buys. They leave for home about 11 a.m.
I still feel pretty good. I do go back to bed for a nap.
We go shopping and out for Chinese dinner, then over to visit Gary and Maria to see their Christmas tree.
It's too late for Frank to go square dancing.
Wow, I had no idea Mom ever drank coffee. Growing up I specifically remember that she always said she loved the smell of coffee, but didn't like the taste. I do remember her taking No Doze over-the-counter medication to stay awake while driving. Riding in the car put her to sleep after an hour or so, and the No Doze was a big dose of caffeine. She did say on yesterday's post that she was up until 12:30 a.m. visiting with Donna and Bob. Was she drinking coffee at that hour? I am pretty sensitive to coffee, although I do enjoy it with cream and sugar. If I drink any coffee past noon it will keep me awake that night.
Mom doesn't say anything about buying a Christmas tree this year, so I assume she didn't have one due to her illness.
Family Dinner
Sunday December 13, 1992
Prayer is answered. I awake feeling good. We're ready to go to Phil and Deb's about 10:00. We read the Sunday paper and leave about 11:00. We are first to arrive. We visit with Dee and Deb. Phil and Steve have gone to Pick up Frank's folks in L.A. They arrive about 1 p.m. Paul & Judy & Tayler arrive about 2 p.m.
We have a nice lasagna dinner about 3 p.m. We open gifts. Steve & Dee must leave early to pick up a friend at the airport from Australia. We stay until 5:30. Stop in Simi for a hamburger.
Donna and Bob arrive about 10 p.m. We talk until 12:30 a.m. I feel real good.
This is the first time I have heard of a Reina Family Reunion. It sounds like Frank's oldest son Philip and his wife Debbie hosted the early Christmas dinner in Palmdale. How nice! It must have been somewhat difficult to get everyone together as Frank's parents lived near Los Angeles Airport 70 miles away and needed a ride, and Delores (Dee), Frank's daughter, and her husband Steve, lived in San Diego, 170 miles away. For Mom and Frank to travel from Simi Valley was only 60 miles, about a one-hour drive. Frank's youngest son Paul and his wife Judy lived right there in Palmdale.
What a busy day for Mom. I am so glad she is feeling better. It sounds like Dr. Semrad was right about her tumors shrinking and the fluid in her abdomen being gone. For her to have such a long busy day and be up past midnight visiting with her best friend from Pollock Pines, she must have been feeling great. Praise God!

A Picnic At Lake Sonoma
Saturday November 28, 1992
Don't feel real good this morning, stomach feels crampy and pains everywhere. Gary and Maria and boys leave for San Francisco about 10 a.m. They'll camp out and head home tomorrow.
We take Donna and Bob and Leah to Lake Sonoma. Chris and Ric and Justin go too. Leah rides with them. Donna has it figured Leah and Justin should marry some day. They barely like each other now. We have a nice picnic at the lake.
Later Frank drives Donna and Bob to Costco. I take a nap.
Chris gave Gary and Maria and us our Christmas gifts this morning, little villages for Christmas decoration.
Donna and Bob leave for home about 4 p.m. Tearful goodbyes as usual.
Donna's granddaughter Leah was born May 22, 1981, just 5 days after Mom's grandson Justin was born on May 17. They never saw each other enough to actually become friends. Leah is still single, but Justin was married last year to his lovely wife Briana.
Lake Sonoma is just a 30 minute drive from our house in Windsor, and the drive through Dry Creek Valley to get to the dam is a stunningly beautiful drive through acres of vineyards and past dozens of wineries. The marina has a lovely picnic area right on the water's edge and that is where we had our picnic.

Derek's Christening Day
Friday November 27, 1992 "Derek's Christening Day"
Up early and ready before 10 a.m. to leave at 10:40 for the church. Donna, Bob and Leah are there when we arrive at 10:50. Ric's mom, Carmen, is there with some family. Derek looks so cute in his white suit and hat.
The priest gives them quite a lecture about being Catholic. Ric says he believes in Christ, though he told us he is atheist. Chris agrees to bring Derek up Catholic though she is Protestant. I am very upset. This seems so wrong to me. I thought about it all night.
Back at the house Chris puts out a lovely lunch. Gary and Maria as Derek's new godparents pass out favors with money in it. Maria is taking this christening very seriously.
Later at 7 p.m. Gary and Maria go out to buy pizza and salad for all of us. We play cards with Donna & Bob. They sleep in their motorhome. I feel good.
What a big weekend, first hosting Thanksgiving dinner, and then hosting a big party for Derek's christening. The photo above is again taken on our front porch with the party guests. In the front row from the left are Carmen's granddaughters Crystal and Sabrina, Donna's (Mom's best friend from Pollock Pines) granddaughter Leah, Ric's friend Scott's two boys Nash and Mason (Scott is the photographer). In the middle row from the left are Carmen's grandson Daniel, Carmen, Justin holding our dog Jessie, and Joe, holding our dog Chewy. In the last row standing from the left are Carmen's brother Armando and his wife Ligia, Mom's best friend Donna and her husband Bob, Frank, Mom, Maria, Junior, my brother Gary, me holding Derek, and Ric.
The christening ceremony was held at Carmen's insistence. She was raised Catholic and believed that Derek would go to purgatory if he was not baptized, so even though I was not Catholic and Ric did not even believe in God, we agreed to the christening to make her happy. Mom was right, this was so wrong. The priest knew that I was not Catholic, but he addressed Ric during the ceremony and lectured him that he must raise his son in the Catholic church. We never went to that church again. I started attending a Protestant church when our second son Ryan was born 3 years later and Derek and Ryan both attended youth group and church camp (in fact Ryan just left for snow camp today), but I put my foot down with Carmen on having Ryan baptized in the Catholic church. It was fraudulent to go through that ceremony with Derek. I believe baptism represents being reborn through putting our faith in Christ and that the decision to be baptized is a personal one to be made by the person being baptized when they are old enough to understand that decision. I accepted Jesus as my savior when I was 15 and was baptized at Van Nuys Baptist Church. When my boys are ready to make that very personal decision someday, they will do the same.

And I Have Lots of Friends Who Care About Me
Saturday November 7, 1992
I feel pretty good again this morning. I pick up Maria at 10 a.m. We go to the craft fair at the Senior Center. We go to a few other fairs and stores, then to lunch at Eggs & Things. It's 3 p.m. when I finally take her home. We had a really good time together, alot of fun.
I go home to lay down and rest a couple of hours. I prepare some cheese bread and we go to Jeannie & Duane's for a potluck lasagna dinner with Harvey & Linda & Myra & Dave. We have great fun, lots of laughs and a good dinner. Found everyone has their problems. I really wouldn't want any of theirs. I have a good life full of lots of love and plenty of everything I could want, lots of friends who really care about me.
It's a late night for me. We get home at 12:30. I'm exhausted.
Mom was very blessed to have so many friends who truly did care about her. Many of her friends went way back to her elementary school days. Unfortunately, Frank threw away Mom's photo albums that I am quite sure had hundred of photos of her friends and activities during their marriage, so I don't have photos of Harvey & Linda, Myra & Dave, or Jeannie & Duane, but I do know that their friendship went back many years. I do have plenty of photos of Donna and Bob, like the one above taken at Lake Almanor in 1989. Donna was her best friend and we spent many vacations with them over the years.
It seems like Mom is finally beginning to become resigned to her own death. In spite of the fact that her problem is terminal illness, she still would not want to trade that for anyone else's problems. She appreciates all the friends and family she has loved over her lifetime, and is reflecting on how good her life has been instead of being sad or angry that it is ending.
Mom always loved to shop and I remember as a little girl she would drag me from store to store shopping for clothes. I hated it, and I still do not enjoy shopping. Fortunately, I am married to a man who loves to shop, so he does the grocery shopping, and I buy clothes maybe once per year. Maria loves to shop too, and makes a big production about getting up early on Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving to hit lots of stores. I'm glad Mom had Maria to go shopping with.

Junior Becomes a Single Skier
Up at 7:15 feeling pretty good. Donna and Bob arrive about 10 a.m. with friends of theirs, Dan and Heather. They have a pontoon boat. I'm in the sun too much greeting them and visiting. I've been so good up until now, staying in the shade. We have a good day, no rain, not much wind.
Gary and Maria fix us a tri-tip roast dinner. It's really good. I don't feel well after dinner. I have pains in my chest. Indigestion? Chest pains in my lungs, right side mostly. We're in bed at 10 p.m. again.
I called Chris and Ric from the marina this morning. Ric answered to say they had a C-section baby last night. He weighed 9 lb 14 oz, 20-1/2 inches long. She went to the hospital yesterday with labor pains but no dilating so they sent her home. Rick said that's enough. Call the doctor and insist on a C-section. He said OK, come on in.
I love this picture that Mom took of Junior, Joe and Justin playing in the mud at the edge of the water! Good sunburn protection!
Donna, Mom's best friend, and Donna's husband Bob live in Pollock Pines, not too far north of Lake Don Pedro, so it was an easy drive for them. They often met us at the lake.
Thank goodness Mom finally got someone to answer the phone at our house! I'm sure she was relieved that Baby Derek had arrived and Mom and baby were healthy and doing well. As I mentioned in this blog earlier, Justin was a C-section baby because his head was too large for my pelvis. His head was 10 cm, my pelvis only 9. My doctor told me he thought this baby was smaller, around 8 pounds and I should be able to have a vaginal birth. Boy was he wrong! Justin was 9 pounds, Derek was 9 lb 14 oz and his head was 12 cm, way too large for my pelvis. I suffered 36 hours of unnecessary labor before finally insisting on a C-section.

My Birthday #58
Tuesday May 26, 1992
My Birthday #58
Up at Donna & Bob's and ready to go by 9 a.m. but Bob is turning the rotors on our brakes so we leave for Tahoe about 10:30 a.m. When we get to Tahoe, we have a buffet breakfast. It's real good. Of course, we pig out. We wander through several casinos making a total contribution of $24 in 2 hours. We are back at Donna & Bob's about 6 p.m. Jennifer, Leah, & Ron come to dinner. After dinner comes the party hats, noise makers, ice cream, cookies, and gifts. What fun!
Leah has grown quite tall for 11 years. Jennifer looks great. Hard work agrees with her. I'm still feeling great! Thank you Lord!
Donna & Bob live in Pollock Pines, about an hour's drive east of Sacramento, and midway between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. I'm so glad Mom got to celebrate her birthday (her third time!) with her best friend Donna. Donna's granddaughter Leah was born just a week after Justin, on May 24, so the birthday celebration was undoubtedly for both Mom and Leah. Leah's mom Jennifer is a few years younger than I am, Donna's youngest of 3 children.
This birthday was to be Mom's last, so I'm glad she had a big celebration! I am 58 right now and because of that, I am acutely aware of how Mom died way too young. My 59th birthday is just a few weeks away, on April 9. When I reach that milestone I will have outlived my mother. In many ways, I feel like my life is just beginning, and I pray that God blesses me with many more years than my beautiful mother had. Mom did enjoy 12 years getting to know her only grandchild, my son Justin, but she never got to know my other two boys or Gary's twin sons, a sad loss for all of them.

Donna Has No Religious Faith
Saturday December 14, 1991
Spoke to Donna (Mom's best friend) for an hour this morning. Kinda a downer to talk to her. She has no religious faith and doesn't understand that God is taking care of me right now while I'm waiting to meet with a new doctor and get started on a new kemo. I'm not worried but she had a fit.
Called Chris and she is feeling better. Two days out of bed, but earlier in the week she was really sick. She's 10 weeks now. She saw the baby and heartbeat in the ultrasound last week.
Frank finished wrapping the gifts all day. I accomplished very little.
We have a real good dinner and watch TV.
I guess that is one of the job duties of the best friend: to worry. Five years earlier Donna was diagnosed with breast cancer and Mom had a fit too. Donna had a large lump in her breast that had been growing for several months. She did not tell anyone and did not go to the doctor for fear it might be cancer. Finally her husband noticed the lump and made her go. Mom was so upset that Donna was not taking care of herself. So now it is Donna's turn to be upset.
On the other hand, I am so impressed that Mom's faith was so strong that she was not the least bit worried. That takes a special kind of faith, the kind that the Bible speaks of in Phillipians 4:6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests for God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Hey, Mom and Frank finally ate dinner at home!

Fluorouracil
We're at Kaiser at 9:30. My IV takes 4 hours, 2000 cc, 2 bags. I only eat a spoonful now and then but must go to the bathroom every 15 minutes to release water. Hopefully, the IV will help my strength. I'm so weak, I can hardly get around. The doctor says this is a typical reaction to my FU5 kemo injection and I should feel better Sunday.
We call Donna tonight and call off our trailer camp trip up north this coming weekend. I'm much sicker tonight. Feel like giving up. Go to bed early. Too sick to answer the phone today.
So Mom and Frank must have planned a camping trip after Thanksgiving dinner. Mom's cancer treatments are finally getting the best of her. As the eternal optimist, it takes alot to make her feel like giving up. So glad I cancelled Thanksgiving dinner!
According to Wikipedia, FU5 is the acronym for the chemotherapy drug Flourouracil. It has been used to battle cancer for over 40 years. "Like many anti-cancer drugs, 5-FU's effects are felt system wide but fall most heavily upon rapidly dividing cells that make heavy use of their nucleotide synthesis machinery, such as cancer cells (other parts of the body with rapidly dividing cells include the cells lining the digestive tract)." The cells in her intestine are being rapidly destroyed. That's why everything she eats goes right through her and she is getting weaker and weaker! I hope the 2000 cc IV she got today was fluids to rehydrate her and not the toxic FU5!
Thanksgiving Dinner is Cancelled
Sunday November 24, 1991
I must feel better today. I have things to do if we are going up north this week. I slept well. I feel a little better. Ric calls to say Chris is still sick and crying and has decided to call of the Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. Would I call everyone?
When I call Cousin Shirley at 11:30 a.m. she has been drinking. I am so disappointed. Later Marc calls and confirms she is back on the bottle bad. They are all very disappointed about Thanksgiving dinner. I call Donna & Bob. They understand.
I divide my grocery list with Frank and we manage to get all our groceries for a week. By evening I'm feeling awful again. the diarrhea has returned.
Thank goodness Mom was feeling a bit better this day. I was so sick the last thing I wanted to do was talk to anyone on the phone, even Mom, and that's saying alot because I loved talking with her. Too bad her Cousin Shirley from Citrus Heights was drunk so early in the day. She suffered from alcoholism most of her adult life, and Mom was one of the few who would put up with her behavior. I guess that's because Mom had 2 alcoholic parents. Marc is Shirley's son and apparently they were all invited for Thanksgiving. The last time I remember visiting Shirley, she was drinking and smoking like a chimney while I nursed my brand new baby in their living room. This was 1981. I thought it was so rude. One other year prior to Justin's birth they came over for Thanksgiving and were very offended that I would not let them smoke in my brand new house on a rainy day. They went out to the garage. I'm so glad I didn't have to deal with the smoke cloud when I was already so nauseous! As much as I hated to disappoint everyone and call of Thanksgiving, it was the best decision for myself and for Mom.

Donna & Bob Visit
I'm up and making bacon and eggs for everyone at 8:30. We visit with Donna & Bob til 11:00 when they leave to visit Bob's sons. I decide to spend the day at Lemona with Frank. We leave at 11:30. Feeling good at Lemona we have 3-4 families come through. I rest alot on a lounge chair.
We leave at 4:30 and stop at Gary's to eat dinner of leftovers. We have a nice 1-hour visit and head home where we relax til Bob and Donna come home about 8:30. We visit til 11:15 and hit the hay.
Mom seems to have quite a bit of energy considering she had major surgery less than 2 weeks ago. How frustrating to have the Lemona house sit vacant all those months. After all the back-breaking work Frank put into it, I'm sure they wanted to be careful with their choice of a new tenant.

Gary's Birthday Party
Saturday October 19, 1991
Donna and Bob arrive at 9:30. Frank and Bob go to Thousand Oaks to deliver the trailer they pulled down. Donna talks to Mark and watches me do my makeup.
Frank leaves for Lemona house for 12-5 open house. Bob and Donna go out to get us Cupid's hot dogs. We will go to Lemona house at 3:30 and then all go to Gary's about 4:30-5 p.m. for the party to celebrate his birthday. The party is fun and lots of kits and food. We stay from 5-8. I feel fine except both of my blisters break and look awful. They are dime size.
Mom and Frank had a huge master bathroom that was bigger than many normal sized bedrooms. It had a large corner soaking tub with large windows surrounding it. Mom spent half an hour every morning applying her makeup and styling her hair at the vanity next to this tub. I would sit on the corner of the tub while she worked at making herself beautiful and we would talk. These were some of my best memories of her. I'm sure it was the same for Donna.
Frank Is Feeling Put Upon
Friday October 18, 1991
Donna and Bob will be here tomorrow morning sometime at my insistence that I'm OK for company. Actually we probably won't see much of them as they plan to spend time with Bob's boys. Marc has a new baby and Greg needs some interference--his life is a mess and so is his wife and children.
The tape on my belly seems to be bothering me all the way up and down: itching. The doctor suggests Benedryl. Luckily, I have some.
There is some straightening, etc to do today and Frank is feeling "put upon". I'm sorry. I'm trying not to ask for much from him.
It's a beautiful 85 degree day. Donna and Bob should enjoy this.
Tomorrow I hope to go to Gary's birthday party for a few hours, at Gary's house.
Tonight we're going out for Mexican dinner.
This is hard for me to say because I loved Mom so much and she loved me unconditionally, but mom could be quite bossy. I spent two weeks with her and Frank in Europe in 1986 and I was disturbed at how much she ordered him around. Frank was very patient and usually took her bossiness quite well, but it looks like this day, he finally stood up to her demands. I know it had to be bad because Frank would do anything for her in spite of her domineering attitude. I can relate to mom wanting to have the house nice and neat for company, as she has passed this on to me, and I understand that she must have been frustrated to not be able to clean the house herself after having surgery. Mom always did like things nice and orderly, and fortunately she married an energetic man who liked things orderly too. Unfortunately, I married a man who likes things completely chaotic, and have two sloppy teenage boys as well, so to retain my sanity I have completely given over the upstairs level of our house to their chaotic messes. My "territory" is the downstairs that I struggle to keep some kind of order.

Chris Has Appendicitis
Wednesday October 2/Thursday October 3, 1991
Still suffering from a backache, we have 2 stay-at-home relaxing days. I give Frank a perm. We go to an afternoon movie and check out a house Gary might like. It's plenty big but no pool or RV access.
Chris called Wednesday evening to say she had all the symptoms of appendicitis and had been through lots of tests at the hospital. Thursday evening she called to say all her symptoms had disappeared and it may have been an infected lymph node. I was worried and am very relieved.
We talk to Donna and I tell her not to come down while I'm in the hospital. We will probably have Thanksgiving dinner together at Chris'. Then may go camping for a few days.
Mom and Frank have begun the search to find Gary and Maria a house in Simi Valley.
I remember well that first episode of appendicitis. Apparently, sometimes the inflammation will come and go. It's too bad my appendix was not taken out this day. Later that same month I became pregnant with my son Derek and ended up having another attack of appendicitis when I was 4-1/2 months pregnant. I ended up having my appendix removed while pregnant the following March.
Mom's friend Donna was a cancer survivor, having beat breast cancer 5 years earlier. We were all so worried when we found out Donna had cancer. I'm sure Donna was just as concerned about her best friend battling ovarian cancer, and about her surgery.

Lake Don Pedro in July
Tuesday July 2, 1991
The boys ski!! They all ski so good! Another hot day 100-105 degrees. We had a skunk in our trash bag last night. Gary flashed a light at him and he turned his backside so we left him alone. We all had a great ski ride early. No boats, no ripples. Gary, Frank and I. We spend most of the day in the water. Donna and Bob arrive in the afternoon. We sit in the water in our chairs. I have an umbrella over me.
We eat all day and have dinner earlier but it was so hot eating in the dining tent. Rosa is sick tonight--too much sun. We tried to tell her, but...
We retire early. The skunk comes back to rummage through the cans. We have tied the trash bags up high. Some neighbors party loud and late.
Mom was so patient with kids. She loved to teach them to ski. She would patiently get in the water behind them, hold the skis together and help them balance and keep their arms straight allowing the boat to pull them up. My dad was the boat driver when I was a kid. After she remarried her new husband Frank was the boat driver. They both did a great job. On this trip Justin and his cousin Joe are 10 and Joe's older brother Junior is 12. Rosa is my sister-in-law Maria's sister. At first the boys would ride behind the boat on a raft or a tube. In the photo above Justin is 7 years old and riding the torpedo behind the boat. You can see our primitive campsite in the background, with sleeping tents, dining tent, and living room shade. Later the boys learned to water ski. The best skiing was early morning. On this morning, with no other boats and no wind, the water was like a mirror reflecting the mountains around the shoreline. Cutting through the glass on a water ski was a thrill and it was a refreshing way to start the day before breakfast.
The July 4th trip to Lake Don Pedro was always a hot one. On this trip, even sitting in the shade was not enough to keep from baking, so everyone moved their sand chairs into the water. Everyone snacked and visited all day and I always gained 4-5 pounds.
Over the years we often had critters. On this trip there was a nightly skunk. On several trips we had a rattlesnake that one of the men killed. One time we even cooked the rattlesnake and had it for dinner. One year we had scorpions and mom got stung. It was very painful for her. Sometimes we even had cows grazing on the shore from a nearby ranch. We generally camped on the shore about 7 miles from the launch ramp at the Don Pedro Dam. It was a 30-40 minute boat ride from both the dam and from Mocassin Landing launch ramp at the north end of the lake. We always launched at the dam, a huge ramp with 7 lanes across. At least once or twice on our camping trips we all piled into the boats and went for a ride to the marina for ice cream cones. That was fun. Most trips we went for a ride up the Tuolumne River until we got to the "log jam" where the cold river water met the warm water of the lake. One year we camped in at Wreck Bay where there were large trees in the water off the shoreline. My brother Gary jumped off a tree and cut his head open. Mom used a butterfly bandage to close the wound without having to drive into Modesto for stitches. On another trip we had a forest fire up the hill. Everyone grabbed buckets, pots and wet blankets and towels and made trip after trip from the water's edge to the fire to douse it with water. The men used shovels and covered the dry burning grass with dirt. Fortunately, we were able to get it out before it got too big, and since we had lots of hands-on-deck we safely put the fire out.

Bob's Retirement Party
Friday June 30, 1991
Up early again to get ready for Bob's retirement party at 12:00. Jettie (Donna's oldest daughter) arrives at 9 a.m. with Don from Lake Havasu. Cousin Shirley, Marc, Chris, Ric and Justin arrive.
Eventually about 35 folks are there to help eat the mountains of food Donna has prepared. Bob has a good time with all his friends. Tom, Jennifer's ex-husband is there. He seems so sad and depressed. Everyone else has a good time. Ron and Don cook the burgers and dogs and seem to have alot of fun. Justin has made 2 new friends. They have a great time running in the woods. They have found a great tree fort down the road.
Leah (Donna's granddaughter) spends the night. She and Justin sleep in bags in the living room. They talk for an hour until I go down and ask them to stop. I don't sleep well. It is too warm.
One of the things I remember about Mom was she was a people-watcher. When we would be in a restaurant or other social arena she would be eavesdropping on other conversations and studying the people. She was so interested in people. I'm sure not another person at that party noticed that someone was sad and depressed. I'm not sure why he was except that he was the ex-son-in-law, so he probably felt out-of-place. Donna's daughter Jennifer was there with her new husband Ron. The ex-husband was there alone.
Justin and Leah were 10 years old and born just 5 days apart. They had not seen each other for years so I'm sure they had lots of catching up to do. I do remember the house always being warm. Living in Pollock Pines at 4000 feet elevation meant that the electricity went out frequently every winter, so residents had wood-burning stoves for heat. That wood-burning stove really cranked out the heat.
